God as the refuge of the Believer

In the old testament, when someone kills his fellow human unknowingly, without any prior plan or premeditation, such a person flees to save his life in one of the cities God commanded the children of Israel to build – Cities of refuge. The city prepared for that purpose delivers the soul of the person who runs into it from the avenger of blood. Once he gets into this city his life is preserved and the avenger of blood cannot touch him anymore. Also, for his life to remain preserved, he needs to remain within the walls of the city until the stipulated period which is until the death of the high priest of that era.

Today, Christ has come and had paid the ultimate price for our soul. He is our refuge and High Priest today and He never dies. All that happened in the Old Testament are pointers to what Christ has come to do in the New Testament.

He came that the old might be taken away. “In that he saith, a new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.“ Heb. 8:13. See also Heb. 14:1-28

Today Christ is our City of refuge and the avenger of blood – the devil is after all men because “all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” Romans 3:23 But whosoever runs into Christ shall be saved.
The believers in Christ are saved because the blood of Jesus has purged them from their guilt and as long as they remain in Him, their salvation is sure.
HE that dwelleth in secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.“ Psalm 91:1
