That Rock Was Christ
Numbers 20:7-12 “And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, [8] Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock: so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink. [9] And Moses took the rod from before the Lord , as he commanded him. [10] And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock, and he said unto them, Hear now, ye rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock? [11] And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts also . [12] And the Lord spake unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.”
In the wilderness of Zin, while the children of Israel wandered in the desert, they hungered and thirsted and murmured against God and his servants, Moses and Aaron. Moses who had long beared their hard-heartedness and impatience was frustrated and cried to God for a way out. God having seen the affliction of the people and their murmurings, commanded Moses to speak to the Rock for a water miracle to happen, but instead, Moses smote the rock twice in anger
Moses smote God twice because he failed to realise that that Rock was Christ. All he needed to do was speak to God for the miracle to follow
How we need to follow the instruction of God in order not to court his anger but receive his blessings. The water still gushed out despite Moses did not follow the due order. God did it to honour his own name but as a result of Moses’ disobedience, God didn’t permit him to enter Canaan land. However, it is important to miss the earthly Canaan land and still enter heaven’s Canaan. God had mercy on Moses and showed him all the land of Canaan – North, South, East and West from the top of a mountain, and how it was going to be shared by lot among the children of Israel, and afterward God took him to heaven.
Do you obey the voice of God? Do you allow the negative attitude of others towards you frustrate you and dishonour God?
1 Corinthians 10:1,3-4
Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; [3] And did all eat the same spiritual meat; [4] And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.
