Hearing from God – Does God still Speak to us?

Does God still speak today?

Isaiah 30:21
“And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.”

God still speak to his people today and he speaks in different ways. One may ask, “How does God speak and how do one hear from him?” The answer is very simple. If I ask you, “how does your father – your earthly father speaks and how do you know he’s the one speaking?” Of course you know his voice and can recognize it when he speaks, even in an unexpected place. If your dad walked into a room behind you and say something, you react by turning around, why? Because you recognize his voice, but if it’s not your dad, you will do nothing, you won’t react because first of all you don’t recognize the voice and it doesn’t relate to you. It is the same with God. Every true child of God recognizes the voice of God and knows when he is speaking to them.

John 10:27 says,
“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:”

God is Father to his children and just as our earthly father will not keep silent on their children, so will God not keep silent – he speaks to guide them, he warns them of danger and lead them into the right path in life. He’s always there for his children as he has promised in Hebrews 13:5, “I will never leave thee nor forsake thee”

God deals and relate with every child of his uniquely, so, it’s important for each child to know how God speaks to him or her. The way He has been speaking to you from the day you knew him as your Lord and Saviour, the same way he will continue to speak to you because He change not (Hebrews 13:8)

However, just like I’ve said earlier, that every true child of God will recognize the voice of God and know when he speak, it’s possible that some still find it difficult to distinguish the voice of God. This may be as a result of;

Being a babe in Christ like young Samuel. The bible says in 1 Samuel 3:7 that Samuel did not yet know the Lord neither was the word of the Lord yet revealed to him – he was a child (vs.1), and so, when God called him, he ran to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou calledst me. And he (Eli) said, I called not; lie down again. And he went and lay down. (vs. 5). This was done thrice and Samuel kept running to Eli, but Eli, at the third time the child ran to him, perceived that God had called the child

1 Samuel 3:9,10
“Therefore Eli said unto Samuel, Go, lie down: and it shall be, if he call thee, that thou shalt say, Speak, Lord ; for thy servant heareth. So Samuel went and lay down in his place. [10] And the Lord came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth.”

Another reason some find it difficult to hear God’s voice is disobedience and hardness of heart – God is not happy speaking to someone who is not willing to go the way He want him to go, because, though He speaks, he would not listen.
Proverbs 1:29-30
“For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the Lord : [30] They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof.”

Hearing from God not only takes being a child of God, but also requires having a working relationship with him. When you are close and intimate with God in your personal life and devotion, he speaks and communicate with you on a daily basis. God still speak to his children today and will not stop speaking to them. As a child of God, do you feel God have not been speaking to you lately?

Hebrews 1:1-2
God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, [2] Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;
